A DAY IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
First Grade -
-Superkids is an all inclusive language arts program which encourages strong phonics and grammar skills while fostering a lifetime love of reading. Students build a solid understanding of the writing process and practice their skills through all genres of writing, while building good handwriting habits.
Mathematics: Students will...

· Increase understanding of addition and subtraction facts
· Use different strategies to build skills and encourage algebraic thinking
· Describe and analyze data

· Classify shapes and solid objects by their attributes
· Learn to follow the teachings of Jesus in our daily lives
· Students are introduced to living a life of faith, and understanding the importance of following the Golden Rule
· Students learn and understand the teachings of the Catholic Church
· As a class we celebrate Holy Days, Festivals, and Saints

Second Grade -
Develop phonemic awareness, oral reading skills, and reading comprehension. Build vocabulary by reading a variety of stories and learn to use context clues. Create one to two paragraphs using a variety of writing types (narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive). Print using appropriate spacing and letter formation. Begin to write letters and words in cursive.
Count money including pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Create and read a variety of graphs. Add two and three digit numbers with regrouping. Subtract two digit numbers with regrouping. Tell time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and five minute intervals.
Use problem solving strategies and solve multiple step word problems. Learn basic multiplication facts.
Create an autobiographical timeline. Learn about services and interview a person about their job.
Draw and write about the life cycles of plants and animals. Collect and study Rocks and Minerals.
Sacramental Preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist - Mini Retreat for First Eucharist - Read and discuss bible stories - Learn about the Ten Commandments
Art Field Trips - Music - Computer Lab - Holiday Celebrations
Third Grade -
Build vocabulary by reading a variety of stories and using context clues
Develop reading fluency and reading comprehension
Weekly spelling program
Learn basic multiplication and division facts
Multiply and divide four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers
Use problem solving strategies to solve a variety of word problems
Learn about Native Americans
Discover the United States through the use of the textbook, literature, and videos to compare different points of view
Develop geography skills
Study space and the solar system
Create a planet report slideshow in computer class
Experience animal habitats and adaptations
Read and discuss Bible stories
Learn about the seasons in the liturgical year

Fourth Grade -
Using the finding God series students meet Jesus in the Sacraments, live like Jesus in the Ten Commandments, practice using the Bible correctly, and participate in guided reflections and bible stories
Math lessons are presented both through audio on the Smartboard and visual presentations by the teacher. Lessons include:
multi-digit multiplication and division, graphing, fractions (equivalency, addition and subtraction), decimals (vocabulary, addition and subtraction), problem solving/mental math & Algebra readiness
Emphasizes vocabulary through the “Wordly Wise” program, improves reading fluency utilizing the Buddy Reading Program with first grade, concentrates on reading comprehension skills, and incorporates monthly book reports using a variety of themes including an oral biography where students may dress as their subject
Studies California history by studying California explorers, the missions and gold rush, the road to statehood, California’s growth and development, its progression as a state, and its future.
Including a trip to a mission and local virtual field trips
Incorporates interactive science experiments including virtual field trips and experiments on-line using the Smartboard to study the engineering process, plant & animals, ecosystems, weather, earth science, matter, energy & motion.
Fifth Grade -
Through the use of teacher-led instruction, group work, individual projects, technology that includes interactive SmartBoard lessons, utilization of the Internet in the classroom, at home, and in the Computer Lab, and varied assessment approaches, the 5th grade will:
· Understand how participating in the Sacraments of the Church strengthens our relationship with, and our understanding of God;
· Continue to build fluent reading skills, comprehend narrative and expository texts, evaluate and critique literature, and apply grammar topics in written work and oral presentations;
· Become proficient in all operations of fractions and decimals and be introduced to pre-algebraic properties and applications
· Study the development of our country, beginning with the earliest settlers, and understanding how the events leading up to the republic as we know it today resulted in a society based on individual rights
· Discover how matter is formed, how plants and animals carry out life processes, how water on earth cycles, how the Sun’s energy affects weather, and the make-up of the solar system
